The Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said that his government regretted the decision and expressed disappointment at the president's decision taken only one month before handing over presidency to the newly elected president.
The Brazilian message said that the recognition came in response to a personal appeal by de facto Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas on 24 November.
The message said that the request was just and in harmony with the principles pursued by Brazil in dealing with the Palestine question.
The Israeli foreign ministry said that the Brazilian decision violated agreements signed between Israel and the Palestinian Authority that stipulated among other things discussing future of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip through negotiations.
American congressmen also strongly condemned the Brazilian decision, claiming that it was against peace and security in the Middle East.
